Fall is trying to arrive!
Well, in the morning it smells like Fall, the leaves are starting to fall, but the temperature is still high. Catching up on posting artwork I have done over the summer. This piece has pieces of black and web material......found along the roadside near my business in Chico, Ca. It is from a black on one side, white on the other tarp, used to wrap some pallet. I found it shredded along the road, stuck up against thorny bushes and such.

grass along the fence (c) 2010 |
keeping an open mind
here is an example of finding once again the metal pieces then letting the mind envision how it can interplay with a woven piece. What does the metal remind you of? In this case it reminded me of grass. That, coupled with my observation of the colors of grass along a dirt road I walk on...................the grass starts out green, then starts turning into yellows, oranges and reds (I wonder though, were these grasses sprayed with something to kill them and hence the color?). Then what? well I imagine the start of a basket shape, in this case oblong.............I know that I want to introduce the other colors here and there, ultimately ending in the warm tones of yellows and oranges. There is no need to have a perfectly shaped "basket", and being forever influenced by natural shapes, the sculpture's shape is determined by it confines. Finally, as in nature, there aren't necessarily easy and clean endings. The piece grows and escapes it's form, undulating and in essence blows in the wind.I was very pleased with this piece............it satisfied the idea I envisioned, natural interacting with a found item.

v growth (c) 2011 |

waxed linen - coiling method
found metal
manzanita wood
My design usually born when inspired by a piece of found metal. This particular piece had been lying around for quite some time, very often tripping over it. It begged to be upright, and I saw a "basket" forming in it's V. Constrained by the angles, the form at first goes along with it's space. It grows bold however and begins to undulate to and fro, and begins to escape.
